First Up- Maya Angelou

When I was about 19 years old, I had the privilege of hearing Maya Angelou speak at the University of Texas at Arlington. My mother and I made it a girl’s date and sat in the audience wide-eyed and waiting for Maya Angelou’s raspy, yet soothing vocal tone to pierce our hearts.  It was one of the most enlightening experiences of my life.

Maya Angelou’s poetry, life, and career have been extremely influential in my writing and career as a poet.  “On the Pulse of the Morning”, the poem that Angelou recited at the inauguration of former President Bill Clinton in 1993, influenced my writing style and taught me that depth and content can be conveyed in laconic stanzas.  “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” and “Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now” taught me the importance of authenticity, self-preservation, and self love.

So, thank you Maya Angelou.  For your bravery, philanthropy, and talents.  Thank you.
