Rest in Royal Power: Horace Julian Bond, Civil Rights Leader, Government Official, Professor, and Writer
"We are confident, I say, and willing, rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."- 2 Corinthians 5:8
On Saturday, August 15, 2015, yet another one of our beloved leaders in the fight for justice and racial equality was called home. A Morehouse College graduate, Julian Bond was a founding member of the Committee on Appeal for Human Rights and helped form the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He was voted into the Georgia House of Representatives in 1965 but was refused to be sworn into his seat until the Supreme Court ruled in his favor in 1966. In 1968, he was the first African-American to be nominated as the Vice Presidential candidate. However, due to his age he withdrew his name from the ballot, as he was too young according to constitutional law. Bond went on to continue his activism and serve as the President and co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center while writing poetry and newspaper columns, .
As we remember his legacy, let us remember that Julian Bond was a man for the people. I encourage you to do extensive research to learn of this incredible man's legacy for yourself.
